About Aluminum Billet

Aluminum billet is a cylindrical or rectangular cast product, serving as the primary feedstock for the extrusion process. Unlike aluminum ingot, which is often remelted for casting or alloying, billet is specifically designed to be homogenized, preheated, and extruded into profiles, tubes, rods, and other shaped products. It is the critical intermediate that bridges aluminum melting and the production of high-value structural and industrial components.
• Raw Material Sources
-Produced from two main feedstocks:
i. Aluminum scrap: Processed through rotary, double-chamber, induction, reverberatory, or shaft furnaces
ii. Aluminum ingot (virgin or recycled, melted in similar furnace types)
The molten metal is cast into billets using a Billet Casting System (typically Direct Chill casting), achieving diameters from 63mm to 600mm and lengths up to 12 meters.
• Available Sizes
Diameter: Φ63–600 mm (depending on extrusion press capacity)
– Length: 6000–12500 mm (standard), custom lengths available
– Round billet (most common) and square billet (for certain profile shapes)
• Processing Routes & End Products
– Homogenization: Billets are heated to a high temperature (typically 500–580°C) to dissolve alloying elements and eliminate internal stresses, ensuring uniform composition and microstructure.
– Pre-heating: Billets are heated to extrusion temperature (around 450–500°C) for optimal metal flow.
– Horizontal Extrusion: The heated billet is pressed through a die to form:
i. Aluminum Profiles – architectural, automotive, industrial, and electronic applications
ii. Tubes – for heat exchangers, fluid handling, and structural use
iii. Rods – for further drawing into wire or machining

Through this integrated process, aluminum billet enables the production of lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and dimensionally precise aluminum components that drive innovation across construction, automotive, transportation, and consumer goods industries.
